Dn.
Moshe Zorea, St.
Innocent’s Orthodox Cathedral (OCA), Anchorage, AK; AA Yuba College,
BA, University of Alaska at Anchorage; JD, University of Puget Sound
Law School (now Seattle University School of Law). Background: Jewish-Christian,
became a believer in Jesus as Messiah from reading Gospel of Matthew
while student in Orthodox Yeshiva in Israel (to practice domestic relations
law in Israel you must be an ordained rabi as Mosaic law applies) (the
book had been hidden in our luggage when we emigrated to Israel by my
mother-in-law), baptized with wife by Southern Baptist minister in hidden
section of Jordan River (so as to avoid trouble with Israeli government
under Begin), returned to states to enter Golden Gate Theological Seminary
in Mill Valley, CA, but was requested to spend a year in a Southern
Baptist congregation in the US. On the eve of going forward to return
to Israel we attended Roman Catholic mass in Chico. Could see readily
the much stronger connection with our Jewish background than had been
the case with Protestant groups and entered the Roman Catholic church
(at that time there was no Orthodox presence in Chico and we knew nothing
about it). We were Roman Catholic for 7 years, nearly all of it in the
Archdiocese of Anchorage under Archbishop Francis T. Hurley. During
this period I taught numerous adult classes for Roman Catholic deacon
candidates and those entering adult ministries. My wife and I were involved
in all adult ministries, lectors, eucharist ministers, CCD teachers,
etc. I was a deacon candidate myself until I realized I could not in
good conscience continue with what was going on in the American Roman
Catholic Church. In 1990 I came in contact with Orthodoxy by attending
St. Thomas Sunday at St. Innocent’s Orthodox Church in Anchorage and
my wife and I later became catechumens at St. John’s in Eagle River.
My wife and I were brought into the Orthodox Church at St. Innocent’s
where we have remained the past 8 years. I teach adult Bible classes
and high school Sunday School. I taught for 3 semesters at St. Herman’s
Theological Seminary in Kodiak, teaching Old Testament and one semester
on comparative theology, focusing on where the differences lie (and
come from) amongst those calling themselves Christians. I have been
very supportive of an Orthodox Bible, purchasing case lots of the original
version (featuring patristic and other Orthodox commentary and all of
the books of the Orthodox canon. I have taught classes on the deutero-canonical
books for the Archdiocese of Anchorage and at St. Innocent’s. I was
somewhat aghast when becoming Orthodox that only one translation had
the 49 books of the Old Testament canon (RSV expanded edition) and that
as a result many Orthodox did not have any awareness of many of the
books absent from Protestant Old Testaments. In fact I observed many
Orthodox simply using Protestant Bibles unaware of the difference.
